Det kongelige nordiske oldskriftselskab

The Kongelige Nordiske Oldskriftselskab (officially: Det kongelige nordiske oldskriftselskab ; translated: The Royal Nordic Altschriftgesellschaft ) was founded on January 28, 1825 by, among others, Carl Christian Rafn and Rasmus Rask under the name Det Nordiske Oldskriftselskab . Rafn became the company's first secretary. On May 9th, 1828 the society was given the title 'Royal' and the first president of the society was the Danish King Frederik VI. Since then, the respective Danish monarch has held the presidency. The society should publish Old Norse literature and promote knowledge of Nordic history. The society grew rapidly in members around the world and with it wealth. Rafn took care of all correspondence, was treasurer, looked for sponsors and edited the publications of the society, which had a fortune of 170,000 crowns at his death.

Publications

In 1826 the Society published its first scientific journal, Tidsskrift for Nordisk Oldkyndighed . From 1832 it was continued as Nordisk Tidsskrift for Oldkyndighed and continued from 1836 to 1863 under the name Annaler for Nordisk Oldkyndighed . Since 1866 the publication has been entitled Aarbøger for Nordisk Oldkyndighed og Historie . In addition, the Society published the Antiquarisk Tidsskrift between 1843 and 1863 .
