North British and Mercantile Insurance Company

The North British and Mercantile Insurance Company was a British insurance company.

It was created in 1862 as a merger of the North British Insurance Company, founded in 1809, and the Mercantile Fire Insurance Company . It existed until 1959.

The company was registered in the Kingdom of Prussia in 1863 , with the head office for Germany located in Berlin . In 1865 and 1871 the North British received approvals in the kingdoms of Württemberg and Saxony.

Between 1910 and 1915 the company was the fourth largest fire insurer in the United Kingdom, with premium income between £ 2.1 and 2.5 million (£ 256 million in today's purchasing power).

On November 1, 1920, the company became a limited company . In 1959, Commercial Union Assurance took over insurance as a subsidiary.
