North West Castle

North West Castle is a country house in Stranraer in the Scottish administrative division of Dumfries and Galloway . The 19th century house is now a hotel.

history

The house is known as the home of Sir John Ross , a noted Scottish rear admiral and polar explorer . Ross had the house built and a park laid out in 1820 after he returned from the first of his Arctic expeditions to solve the Northwest Passage issue. Ross commissioned a full-size model of his cabin on his ship the Victory , which made it easy to explain details of the polar expedition to visitors to the country house. You can still see this replica today as its structure forms part of the hotel bar.

The Reverend Robert Cunningham , an influential man in 19th century Scottish education, moved in in 1860 . Cunningham lived in the country house after he retired as director of George Watson's College in Edinburgh . He was also the founder and first director of the Edinburgh Institution for Language and Mathematics (later Melville College ) and the Blair Lodge School in Polmont . He moved into North West Castle after the Free Church of Scotland was founded after it split from the Church of Scotland in May 1843. Cunningham lived in North West Castle until his death.

In 1970 North West Castle was converted into the first hotel in the world with an indoor curling alley and today curlers from all over the world are guests there.
