An emergency camp is a temporary resting place where people in emergencies can be sheltered from the weather. They usually only have the most necessary equipment and offer no comfort beyond weather protection.

In remote alpine shelters , emergency camps are usually offered for hikers who, due to exhaustion or other adverse circumstances, have no alternative to staying overnight and can no longer find space in the existing guest rooms or in the mattress dormitory. The hut regulations of the German Alpine Club have such emergency camps in their own tariff class and expressly stipulate that they may only be allocated when all other sleeping places are occupied.
