Notre-Dame-des-Victoires (Tianjin)
The Notre-Dame-des-Victoires or Wanhailou Church ( Chinese 望海楼 教堂 , Pinyin Wànghǎilóu jiàotáng , English Wanghailou Church ), also known in Chinese as the Catholic Wanghailou Church (望海楼 天主堂Wànghǎilóu tiānzhǔtáng ) or Church of Our Lady (圣母 得胜 堂Shèngmǔ déshèng táng ) is a Catholic church in the Hebei District of Tianjin City , China. It is located on the north bank of the Hai He River in the northwest of the city on Jingzhonghe Road between Shizilin Bridge and Jingangqiao Bridge.
A first church on this site was destroyed just a year after its construction during the Tianjin massacre of 1870, the second burned down in 1900 during the Boxer Rebellion . The current building was built in 1904 by the French in the French lease area of Tientsin (then Tianjin ). The last major destruction occurred in 1976 during the Tangshan earthquake , and in 1983 it was rebuilt.
The church dedicated to Our Lady of Victory has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China in Tianjin (3-6) since 1988 .
As a former bishopric, it is sometimes referred to as a cathedral, in names such as Cathédrale Notre-Dame-des-Victoires or Wanghailou Cathedral .
