Emergency power unit

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An Emergency Power Unit or emergency power unit is a pure emergency unit and differs so clearly from an APU ( Auxiliary Power Unit ) as z. B. is used in the Panavia Tornado .

The term is used in the military for the hydrazine-powered emergency unit of the F-16 fighter aircraft. The single-engine F-16 is equipped with an EPU, which supplies electrical and hydraulic energy for the aircraft control for about 10 minutes in the event of an engine failure. The pilot gains time to restart the engine or bring the machine to the ground in a controlled manner. Hydrazine is catalytically decomposed and acts as a monofuel.

The term also includes other emergency units such as B. fold-out ram pressure turbines RAT at Airbus or emergency batteries and pressure accumulators. In general, however, the term is only used for the EPU of the F-16.
