Nuckelavee

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Nuckelavee (or Nuckalavee ) is a creature from Scottish sagas from the Fuath family .

As a creature from Celtic mythology , the Nuckelavee is the most feared of all Scottish elves . It lives mainly in the sea, but is held responsible for destroyed crops , epidemics and drought . His breath makes the crops wither and the cattle sick.

It resembles a centaur , has an enormous, gaping mouth and a single huge eye that burns with a red flame. The most gruesome detail of his appearance is the fact that he has no skin. Black blood flows through its yellow veins and the pale tendons and powerful muscles are visible as a pulsating mass. He has an aversion to running water and those who are chased by him only need to cross a stream to get rid of him. Some reports claim that it is just one big head on two small arms, but with all of the above characteristics.

Another aversion of the Nuckelavee is the burning of seaweed to make kelp . This angered him and caused him to ignite a raging plague , kill cattle and other animals, and destroy the crops. When that happens, he can only be stopped by The Mither O'The Sea , another god-like creature from Celtic and Orkney mythology.

Trivia
