Nueva Loja

Nueva Loja , but mostly called Lago Agrio (although this is officially only the name of the associated canton), is the capital of the Ecuadorian province of Sucumbíos . The city has 43,809 inhabitants (2005).

Nueva Loja is located in the center of the province of Sucumbíos in northeast Ecuador, a good 20 km south of the state border with Colombia . It is the largest city in the Ecuadorian Amazon basin . The city was founded around 1970 as a base for the newly developed oil fields in the area. After test drilling in the Lago Agrio I oil field , which was named by Texaco workers after the company headquarters in Sour Lake , Texas , and the construction of the first pipeline, regular oil production began in 1972. During this time, the Ecuadorian government mainly supported residents of the southern Andean region of Ecuador, in particular the Loja province , in which there was a drought, in moving to Lago Agrio. From the settlement of the oil workers and the other settlers, the city of Nueva Loja emerged, which became the capital of the newly established canton of Lago Agrio in 1979 and the capital of the new province of Sucumbíos in 1989.

Due to the oil production and the settlement, the originally existing tropical rainforest has suffered or was extensively destroyed. The area around Nueva Loja has suffered major environmental damage from the oil spill in the northern Amazon lowlands of Ecuador . T. extremely badly deteriorated ( soil degradation ), in particular due to pollution by petroleum or petroleum residues. The indigenous communities of the Cofán , who lived in the region prior to oil prospecting and settlement, have withdrawn to more remote regions.
