Instead of going home to Oxford from her Swiss girls' school, Evangeline would rather “experiment” with men.
An odyssey begins for her, which she takes on the side of French artists, a Russian musician, a girl-trading count, a Greek businessman, a Turkish soldier and an American engineer, first to Paris and the French coast, then to Venice, Athens, Smyrna , a harem in the Turkish province, finally leads back to Paris via Istanbul.
On the way she meets cocottes , concubines , slaves and schoolmates, about whose love relationships and experiences with men she learns.
But at the end of her journey Evangeline is still untouched.
