O Independente

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The O Independente was a Portuguese weekly newspaper that appeared between May 20, 1988 and September 1, 2006. The newspaper was founded in 1988 by Paulo Portas , Miguel Esteves Cardoso and Manuel Falcão .

The newspaper became particularly important in the 1990s. On the one hand, the O Independente made a major contribution to the realignment of the right-wing conservative Portuguese party CDS-PP , on the other hand, the paper was known for its critical reporting on the government under Aníbal Cavaco Silva . The O Independente is considered to be partly responsible for the election of the head of government, which later strained the relationship between the CDS-PP under Paulo Portas and the Portuguese Social Democrats .

After co-founder and two editors-in-chief Paulo Portas left the editorial business due to his political work, Constança Cunha e Sá , Isaías Gomes Teixeira , again Miguel Esteves Cardoso and finally Inês Serra Lopes took over the management of the editorial team.

After 2000, the number of copies of the O Independente fell steadily. Due to various legal proceedings, high legal fees had to be paid, so that bankruptcy had to be filed. Although in April 2001 the newspaper was still a majority company under the last editor-in-chief Inês Serra Lopes, the cessation of the paper on September 1, 2006 with the 955 edition could not be prevented.

Since then, at the latest, the liberally oriented Expresso has been leading the Portuguese weekly newspaper market.
