Blackboard with information about history

Originally there was a “blue mill” at this location, in which woad plants were processed with the help of water power . After fermentation, the juice obtained had a blue color, indigo . In the Nesselrath register from 1605 it is recorded that the mill was built by Sebastian Tenz around 1599. Probably not until the beginning of the 18th century was a grinding shop built as a double-headed half-timbered construction. The earlier half-timbered outbuildings have been preserved. The facility burned down completely in 1906 and was replaced by a brick building the following year. After another fire in 1966, only the front remained standing. Up until this point in time, the water wheel was still in use. Only after the fire ruin had been rebuilt, water power was replaced by electricity. Until 1979, a Solingen company with 45 employees produced knife blades for the cutlery industry.

In the 1980s, the Kotten was considered a "eyesore for male dogs", and it was not until 1993 that both the site and the building were renovated. In 1997, the monument protection prize of the Bergisches Geschichtsverein was awarded for the stylish restoration of the industrial monument Obenrüdener Kotten. The building is now used as a residential building with holiday apartments.
