Upper moraine

The debris masses deposited on the surface of a glacier are called upper moraine . The upper moraine is one of the moving moraines and is found mainly in the depletion area of melting glaciers. Occasionally, upper moraines cover the entire surface and only make the ice masses visible at the glacier gates , breaks or crevices. In contrast to other types of moraines, the material transported by them is hardly treated glacial and therefore remains mostly angular, coarse rubble.

The debris lying on it can lead to bizarre surface shapes of the glacier ice, such as glacier tables .

The former upper moraine deposited in the glacier bed after a glacier has melted is known as the ablation moraine .
