The Obertor ( facing the Upper Rhine ) is the last surviving medieval city gate in Neuss , dating from the 13th century , which controlled the important trade route to the episcopal city of Cologne in the south of the Neuss city fortifications . It is located in the immediate vicinity of Oberstrasse .

It has been a registered monument since April 4, 1985.

history

As the only and largest of the 6 fortified city gates originally in the city wall ( Obertor, Niedertor, Rheintor, Hessentor, Hamtor, Zolltor ), it has completely survived the ages. Its oldest still visible parts date from the 13th century. Many events in the history of Neuss, such as the siege by Karl the Bold in 1475 and the storming of the city in the Truchsessian War in 1586, are directly related to it. Today the section on medieval city history of the Clemens Sels Museum is housed in the Obertor .
