Obviativ (lat. Obvius , ' coming towards ') is a term used in linguistics that has slightly different meanings in different contexts. Generally speaking, the obviative is a grammatical category used to mark that one argument of the verb has a "more distant" status than the other; the opposite of obviativ is then proximal.
