The Ochanomizu Joshi Daigaku ( Japanese お 茶 の 水 女子 大学 , German Women's University Ochanomizu , English Ochanomizu University ) is a Japanese state university in Bunkyō-ku , Tokyo . Along with Nara Joshi Daigaku , it is one of the two state women's universities in Japan.

The school name " Ochanomizu " comes from the place where it was founded, where it was until 1932 (see Yushima Seidō ). The Tokyo Medical and Dental University ( 東京 医科 歯 科 大学 , Tōkyō ika shika daigaku ) is located in its former campus today .

history

The university was founded in 1875 as the state normal school for girls Tokyo ( 東京 女子 師範学校 , Tōkyō joshi shihan gakkō ). It was renamed to Higher Normal School for Women in 1890, and then in 1908 to Higher Normal School for Women Tokyo ( 東京 女子 高等 師範学校 , Tōkyō joshi kōtō shihan gakkō ). The higher normal school for women (Japanese joshi kōtō shihan gakkō ) was an educational institution that educated teachers at the girls ' normal schools and girls' middle schools.

In 1923 the Great Kanto earthquake destroyed the school buildings, and in 1932 the school moved to the current campus. In 1949 the school developed into the Ochanomizu Women's University.
