Wakako Hironaka

Wakako Hironaka ( Japanese 広 中 和 歌子 , Hironaka Wakako ; born May 11, 1934 in Tokyo ) is a former Japanese upper house member of the Democratic Party (DPJ) and was Japanese minister as head of the environmental agency from 1993 to 1994 . Within the party, she belonged to the Hata group.

Hironaka studied English literature at the Ochanomizu Women's University . She then earned a Masters in Anthropology from Brandeis University in Massachusetts . In the 1986 election she was first elected to the House of Lords via proportional representation for the Kōmeitō and confirmed in 1992. In 1993 she was appointed head of the environmental agency in the Hosokawa cabinet .

After the dissolution of the Kōmeitō, Hironaka participated in the founding of the Shinshintō in 1994 , and after its dissolution then in the formation of the voice of the people ( 国民 の 声 , Kokumin no Koe ). In the 1998 upper house election she was elected as an independent for Chiba . She later joined the DPJ and was deputy party chairman from October to December 2002 and from 2005 to 2006. In the 2010 Sangiin election , Hironaka ran on the DPJ proportional representation list, but received only 28,629 preferential votes nationwide and missed re-election.

Hironaka has published and translated a number of books. She is married to the mathematician Heisuke Hironaka and has two children.
