Odusia
Odusia is the title of a literary work by the Roman poet Livius Andronicus . The epic is conceived as a translation of Homer's Greek Odyssey . Only a few fragments of the work have survived, most of which are written in Saturnians . A few fragments in the dactylic hexameter, the classic meter of the epic, are interpreted by research as later additions.
The Odusia offers a gathered, strongly Romanized material about the wanderings of Odysseus and is the first great work of Roman literature. While older research argued that the translation was designed and intended for school lessons, today (especially after Jörg Rüpke ) it is located in the aristocratic milieu. According to Rüpke, it is said to have been intended for an oral, excerpted lecture at the banquet and to present Odysseus as a figure that identifies the nobility.
