Oekonux

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Oekonux is a combination of words “ economy ” and “ GNU / Linux ”. The Oekonux project was founded to investigate the potential of free software to fundamentally change the prevailing political and economic structures.

History of the project

At the first “ Wizards of OS ” conference in July 1999 there was a spontaneous discussion on the panel “New Economy?”. A mailing list was then set up, with the help of which interested parties could exchange ideas. In addition to the mailing list, a website was created on which texts are published.

In April 2001 and November 2002 Oekonux conferences were organized. Over a hundred people took part in the second conference, the event lasted three days, and many presentations and workshops were offered. The third conference took place in May 2004 in Vienna and the fourth conference in March 2009 in Manchester .

In January 2004 the Oekonux community started a wiki .

The project was discontinued in April 2013. All resources are still available online as historical documents. Two initiatives already established during the Oekonux period are considered follow-up projects: the collective blog keimform.de formed in 2006 and the English-language journal Critical Studies in Peer Production , founded in 2009 , which has since been renamed Journal of Peer Production .
