Open construction (musical instrument construction)

Comparison between two tenor trombones with quart valve: open construction (left), closed construction (right)

The term open construction (also open wrap ) describes a construction type in musical instrument construction , especially with the trombone .

To compensate for the disadvantages of the closed construction of the quart valve bow in a tenor bass trombone , the open construction was developed in the 1980s. The tube of the valve bend is guided as straight as possible in a few loops. This should avoid tight radii when using the quart valve in order to achieve an air flow with as little resistance as possible. A disadvantage of this design is that the quart valve bow protrudes over the main tuning slide, which makes the instrument more sensitive.
