An ear piercing gun is a device for making ear piercings , for example for earrings or piercings . It came into use in the 1960s.

The original pistol was "loaded" with an ear stud . When the trigger is pulled, a tensioned spring is released and the ear stud is shot through the earlobe . With newer pistols there is no longer a clamping device, but the earring is pushed through the skin with the help of the pistol. The ear stud is loaded separately in a cartridge.

The use of ear guns is controversial.
