Kalmuk is a variety of Oiri. Although the two language areas are far apart, they are closely related due to the migration of the speakers towards the west.

There are scattered Oiri ethnic groups with different dialects of an Oiri language. Of the speakers, over 200,000 live in western Mongolia, 210,000 in the People's Republic of China and 140,000 in the Kalmyk Republic .
