The Old Bridge is a former road bridge in the Scottish city of Stirling in the council area of the same name . The structure, which is now only used by pedestrians, was included in the Scottish list of monuments in 1965 in the highest category A.

history

Already in the Middle Ages a bridge crossed the Forth near Stirling , where the famous Battle of Stirling Bridge was fought in 1297 . This was, although a stone arch bridge is depicted on a town seal from that time, a wooden bridge, which was probably about 60 m upstream. The current Old Bridge was built in the late 15th or early 16th centuries. Presumably, a ferry made the crossing at this point possible. In order to cut off access to the city for the Jacobite troops during the Jacobite uprising of 1745 , the arch closest to the city was destroyed. After the uprising ended, the bridge was repaired until 1749. It was used until a new bridge was built around 100 m downstream in 1831. This year it was closed to wagon traffic and has only been open to pedestrians since then. The Old Bridge was reinforced between 1912 and 1920.

description

The 81.7 m long masonry viaduct is located on the northern edge of historic Stirling. The arch bridge spans the Forth with four brick-lined, almost semicircular segment arches . The clear widths of the individual arches are between 11.6 m and 17.1 m. The pillars with pointed ice breakers are each 4.5 m wide. The clear width between the parapets is around four meters. The bridge describes a slight arch with a deflection of about 0.6 m. This may be due to movements in the foundation.
