Ole Lukøje
Ole Lukøje (Danish Ole-Lukøie ) is a literary figure and a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen based on the folk legend figure of the Sandman . The male gently brings children to sleep, bringing them good or bad dreams depending on how good or bad they behaved. Ole Lukøje's name is made up of two parts: Ole is a common boy's name in Danish, and Lukøje can be translated there as eye-closer .
The two umbrellas that Ole Lukøje carries with him are characteristic, one under each arm. He opens the umbrella with pictures on the inside over the good children, who then dream of the most beautiful stories all night long. He spreads the umbrella over the naughty children, which has no pictures inside, so that they sleep deeply and without a dream all night.
In the story, Ole Lukøje visits boy Hjalmar every night for a week and tells him stories. In the last story on Sunday he tells of his brother, who is also called Ole Lukøje, but also of Death , who closes the eyes of those he visits and eats them.
The motif of Morpheus , the ancient Greek dream god, has flowed into the figure of Ole Lukøje .
