Oleum animale foetidum crudum

The Stinking animal oil or raw animal oil , also Hirschhorn oil , bone oil , French oil ; Oleum animale foetidum crudum , is a brown-black, thick, oily and penetrating, disgusting-smelling liquid (oil) obtained by dry distillation of animal carcass parts (bones, skin, horn, hooves, etc.).

It served u. a. as a starting material for the production of Dippels animal oil . Today the smelly animal oil is used to repel insects in horses or to protect plants from being bitten by game .
