Oligoclonal bands

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term oligoclonal bands (abbreviation OKB or OCB) plays a role in the diagnosis of nerve water (cerebrospinal fluid) . In the isoelectric focusing , immunoglobulins of the IgG type are shown as bands. If there are more bands in the CSF than in the serum, this allows the conclusion that immunoglobulin synthesis is in the central nervous system. This is an indication of an inflammatory process taking place there, such as in multiple sclerosis .
