The Onkyo Corporation is a manufacturer of consumer electronics , based in Osaka ( Japan ).

history

The company was founded in 1946 by Osaka Denki as Osaka Denki Onkyo KK and initially limited itself to the manufacture of tonearms for turntables . In the following years, stereo systems also expanded the product range. In 1981, the first consumer dual cassette player with functions such as high-speed copying and simultaneous mixing came on the market. Four years later, Onkyo developed the first CD player with optical data transfer. Onkyo means something like "sound harmony".

Current development

Today Onkyo is one of the largest manufacturers of entertainment and audio electronics alongside Denon , Pioneer , Panasonic , Philips , Samsung , Sony and Yamaha . Stereo and multi-channel amplifiers , AV receivers and DVD players make a significant contribution to this market position . In this area, Onkyo introduced innovative technologies such as WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology) and established standards such as the Ethernet interface in its AV and stereo receivers and amplifiers, for example for access to Internet radio channels or DLNA servers. For the latter, Onkyo offers an Android app with which audio files on the smartphone can be decoded and output by the amplifier via WLAN / Ethernet.

The earlier high-end models from Onkyo were called "Integra" and the THX -certified receivers in particular were trend-setting. Integra and Integra Research are now separate brands of Integra Home Theater , a division of Onkyo Corporation.

In January 2012, the American musical instrument manufacturer Gibson acquired shares in Onkyo Corporation in Japan as well as the majority shares in Onkyo USA and thus became the audio manufacturer's second largest shareholder.

In 2014 Onkyo acquired the majority of Pioneer's home electronics division.
