1332 was by Wolfert III. Borsele initiated the construction of the first church in Veere, which was raised to an independent parish church in 1348 when it was parish off from Zanddijk. The church also became a canons' church in 1472 . Wolfert VI. von Borsele, Herr von Veere, commissioned Antoon I Keldermans to build a larger cross basilica with ambulatory and chapel wreath in 1479, from 1512 his son Rombout Keldermans supervised the building. The basilica was built in the Brabant Gothic style. Parts of the previous building were not laid down during the construction of the new church and were used as a place of worship. From around 1520, construction began to stagnate and the church reached its present size. Only the lower floors of the tower were completed, the vaults and tracery remained unfinished, the construction work on the expansive choir was only just beginning, so that the remains of the old church had to serve as a choir.

The Reformation was introduced in Veere in 1572 . For Calvinist worship, the copper choir screen was removed and the three-aisled hall choir and the north and south transepts were separated by brickwork. In 1686 the church suffered great damage during a city fire, it was restored in the simplest form. During the time of the French occupation of Veeres from 1795 to 1813, the church was converted into a hospital by drawing in four floors and walling up the large windows except for small openings. In 1809 the church was again significantly damaged by English ship guns. A garrison of the Dutch military was stationed in the building from 1832 to 1861. The demolition of the building, already decided by the church council, was prevented by the Dutch state by protecting it as a cultural monument. Since then, it has been used for various purposes, such as special church services, festive and sporting events or Christmas markets. It has had an official cultural function since the 1970s.
