Open-ended Working Group on Nuclear Disarmament

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Open-ended Working Group on Nuclear Disarmament , or OEWG for short , is an open-ended UN working group on the ban on nuclear weapons . It was established in 2010.

A second round of talks was decided in October 2015. It took place in three parts:

  • February 22nd to 26th, 2016
  • May 2nd to 13th, 2016
  • August 5th to 19th, 2016

Although the German government took part in the 2016 round of talks, it voted at the UN General Assembly in December 2016 against negotiations on an "internationally binding instrument for the ban on nuclear weapons that would lead to their complete abolition." 129 of the 193 UN states took place.
