OpenAerialMap was a project to collect free aerial photographs from which a world map was created. It arose from the desire to be able to illustrate the maps from OpenStreetMap using these images in accordance with proprietary services such as Google Maps .

The first worldwide version released in 2007 was based on material from NASA World Wind and iCubed. However, its resolution does not allow the recognition of streets or buildings. Project users tried to create better material with the help of model airplanes or quadrocopters . In addition, local free sources were sought. As of February 2009, the results of these efforts were essentially limited to the North American continent. The recordings could optionally be overlaid with the maps from OpenStreetMap.

Since mid-July 2009, OpenAerialMap cannot be reached for the time being due to ongoing massive problems such as the stagnating community, storage space problems and problems with the hoster. The wiki is still available, but has been in read-only mode since March 2011.

In July 2014, the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) announced that it would revive the OpenAerialMap project.
