Ophcrack is a free computer program under the GPL license that tries to break encrypted (hashed) passwords using rainbow tables . The program supports the import of LM hashes and NTLM hashes, including direct import of the SAM file under Windows. On most computers, passwords can be deciphered within a few minutes . Furthermore, the program masters the brute force method to quickly find passwords of up to three characters long.

Rainbow Tables for LM hashes of alphanumeric passwords are freely available, two Windows XP tables, one small, the other fast, and one for Windows Vista / 7.

Objectif Sécurité has developed further tables for professional use that are able to crack even longer password hashes.

Ophcrack is also available as a live CD distribution.

With version 2.3 Ophcrack is able to crack NTLM hashes.
