Life

In 2001, Ophelia Hoff-Saytumah, the owner of a travel agency from Monrovia, became Lord Mayor of Monrovia. The appointment was made at the request of then President Charles Taylor . In her first term of office, Ms. Hoff-Saytumah had to prevent the almost complete collapse of public order and administration in Monrovia and witnessed the apocalyptic destruction of the city center of Monrovia by the civil war troops.

After Taylor's flight, she stayed in office on a provisional basis and successfully stood for re-election. When the rebuilding of the Liberian economy and the capital Monrovia came to the fore with the election of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf , Hoff-Saytumah used her insider knowledge as the wife of the responsible minister to set up a company to trade petrol and fuels in Monrovia.

As a result of intensive reviews of the city administration's business documents by independent experts from the World Bank , which revealed irregularities and sham deals , as well as internal instructions to city authorities to give preference to their petrol stations, she was accused of corruption and lost her post as mayor in July 2009 from Monrovia. Mary Broh was her successor .

Ophelia Hoff-Saytumah became Deputy Director of the Liberia Oil Company after her dismissal .
