It grants small loans to entrepreneurial poor people and at the same time trains them in business management and health care. The headquarters of the main organization are in Chicago .

history

The Australian David Bussau is co-founder of the network, which was created in the early 1970s for aid organizations on the basis of his personal impressions on several trips to Indonesia.

The network now consists of the five support countries Australia, USA, Canada, Great Britain and Germany as well as various partners in 25 recipient countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe. In 1996, Opportunity International Germany of the entrepreneur with the help of private wealth Karl Schock founded.

The network works with around two million clients worldwide.

Granting credit

The network would like to enable people to lead a self-determined life based on their own work with a start-up loan ( help for self-help ). The borrowers do not have to hold their own collateral.

Before a loan is issued, potential borrowers are trained for their business ventures and the feasibility is checked. The borrowers (almost 90 percent of them are women) are integrated into a group of borrowers ( trust bank , from the English trust = trust) who vouch for and help each other.

The loans, averaging EUR 183, have market interest rates and the repayment rate is 97 percent. The new loan and an average of six family members who are also cared for have a multiplier effect.

Muhammad Yunus was honored with the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for his microfinance work in Bangladesh. Yunus supports Opportunity International.
