An order system defines an order and describes an order principle.

A classification system is defined by the set of all descriptors permitted for indexing the documentation units with the associated explanations and notes . It is aimed and limited to the topic to be sorted. It is structured according to a certain basic documentary idea, the principle of order .

Typical ordering principles are classification , register , faceted classification , combination of concepts , text search and vector space model . The size of a classification system results from the number of binding descriptors it contains. If it contains further supplementary vocabulary as well as many explanations and hints in addition to the descriptors , then one speaks of a well-developed or comfortable classification system.
