The Organización de Pioneros José Martí ( OPJM , German: Pioneer Organization José Martí ) is the umbrella organization for the children and young people of Cuba .

Predecessor of the OPJM

In 1931 the League of Pioneers in Cuba ( LPC ) was established and existed for five years. After the Cuban Revolution , the Unión de Pioneros Rebeldes ( UPR - Union of Rebel Pioneers ) was founded on April 4, 1961 , which was renamed Unión de Pioneros de Cuba ( UPC ) a year later . Although only "selected" children could become members of the pioneers until 1966, the number of members rose continuously.

founding

At the 3rd Congress of the Communist Youth Association of Cuba in 1977 it was decided to transform the UPC into the Organización de Pioneros José Martí , with major changes being made to the structure and operation of the organization. Since then, the pioneering organization has embraced all children and adolescents from first to ninth grade.

priorities

The priorities of the OPJM are as follows:

  • Training the pioneers to become future women and men to continue the work of the revolution.
  • Awakening interests in teaching and studying, a sense of social responsibility and a love of the fatherland.
  • Forming the habitus of work in the children
  • Inoculation of the love for the martyrs and heroes of the fatherland, as well as the knowledge of the most important events in the history of Cuba .
  • Develop activities in sport, culture and recreation.
  • Promote ethical and moral values in children.

In July 2013 the management of the OPJM announced that the training of the supervisors would be strengthened and that the wishes of the pioneers would be addressed in the discussions. All previous subgroups are now combined to form the Exploradores (span: to explore). Events that are more differentiated according to age categories are also to be offered.

Groupings

The pioneers are classified according to age and school year: From the first to the third grade they are Moncadistas , named after the storming of the Moncada barracks . From the fourth to the sixth grade they are primer nivel José Martí (first grade) and from the seventh to the ninth grade they are segundo nivel José Martí (second grade).

The organization has more than 1.5 million members. The motto of the organization is: “ Pioneros por el comunismo ¡Seremos como el Che !” ( "Pioneers for Communism - we will be like Che!" ).
