The protagonist of the work, the childlike Oscar, finds instructions for time travel in the estate of his grandfather, along with the necessary utensils for the different times. Oskar takes himself back to Nuremberg in the 15th century. But it turns out that he is confronted with numerous unpredictable problems, one of which is a fight that causes him to lose his memory.

Hindered by the loss of memory from quickly returning to his time, Oskar ends up in a criminal case involving missing infants. When Oskar and the young woman named Kathrin, who works as a pharmacist and midwife and who Oskar has taken in, come too close to the perpetrators, Kathrin is accused of being a witch and child robber and imprisoned. With the help of the young Albrecht Dürer and some adults, Oskar finally succeeds in unmasking the real perpetrators, freeing Kathrin and finally returning to his own time.
