Osteoclast activating factors

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Osteoclast-activating factors (OAF, osteoclast-activating factors or osteoclast-stimulating factors ) represent a collective name for various lymphokines that have a modulating effect on osteoclasts (including IL-1Beta and TNF-Alpha ) with an effect that promotes bone resorption .

An increased release of OAFs is an important pathomechanism in multiple myeloma, a disease that may cause a. is characterized by osteolysis . The increased activity of the osteoclasts in turn leads to an increased release of interleukin-6 . This cytokine has a growth-promoting effect on the myeloma cells. Out of this interaction, tumor-induced bone destruction develops into a self-sustaining process.
