This occurs as a local or generalized overgrowth ( hypertrophy ) of bone tissue, whereby the resilience is reduced.

Primary form

It occurs as a primary form (generalized) in osteopetrosis (marble bone disease), Engelmann syndrome , melorheostosis and other, rare syndromes, such as Lenz-Majewski syndrome , tricho-dento-osseous syndrome , trichothidystrophy type G or Raine Syndrome , also in infantile malignant osteopetrosis , in pycnodysostosis , osteopoikilosis ( Buschke-Ollendorff syndrome ) or together with leukocyte adhesion defects .

Further syndromes can be found under primary bone dysplasia with increased bone density .

Secondary forms are the consequences of other clinical pictures such as inflammation, tumors or kidney diseases.

An example is renal osteodystrophy , osteodystrophia deformans , osteomyelofibrosis , hypervitaminosis D , hypoparathyroidism or Schnitzler syndrome .

Osteosclerosis can also be caused by chronic, excessive fluoride intake. One then speaks of fluorosis . The pelvis, spine and ribs are mainly affected; pain can occur in the lower spine and sacrum.
