Otto II of Warburg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Otto II von Warburg († July 5, 1288 in Helmstedt ) was abbot of the monasteries Werden and Helmstedt from 1277 to 1288 .

Otto came from the East Westphalian family von Warburg, which was closely connected with the monasteries Werden and Helmstedt. After being elected Abbot of Werden and Helmstedt, he sold Frisian property and the goods belonging to the Asterlagen farm to pay off the debts of his predecessor Albero von Tecklenburg . When it came to taxes and duties, the people of Helmstedt were particularly stingy and denied the abbey the right to collect taxes. In 1288 the citizens took the side of Prince Heinrich von Braunschweig, who was involved in inheritance disputes with his brothers Albrecht and Wilhelm . When Abbot Otto appeared in person on July 5 as a mediator in the city, he was killed in the street. He was buried in the Ludgerikirche of the abbey.
