Oumou

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Oumou is a female given name of West African origin. The French spelling “ou” is pronounced as “u” in German, actually the name would be written as “Umu” in its original language Bambara ( Mali , West Africa). Due to the colonization of Mali by the French, this spelling has been preserved to this day.

The name means something like “late-born” or “latecomer” and is always chosen for the second or third child if a woman has not given birth to a child for a longer period (approx. 10 years).

The male counterpart to Oumou is " Modibo ".
