Lists on the subject

The Ounep even sipp , is a spear-thrower of the Kanak of New Caledonia .

description

The ounep is made from coconut fiber and fish skin. A thick knot that serves as a handle is attached to the end and a loop is attached to the other end . The length of the ounep varies from just a few to a length of about 40 centimeters.

To throw a javelin, the noose is pulled over the index finger and the rest of the ounep is wrapped around the spear shaft. The tension is maintained as long as the index finger is pressed forward. The spear is accelerated by the swing of the arm forward; its speed, penetration and range is increased by the spear thrower. The spear detaches itself from the ounep and it remains in the hand of the thrower.
