Oval collar connector

Wall socket made of metal with an inserted plug

The oval collar plug device according to DIN 49450 (socket) and 49451 (plug) is a three-phase plug connection that was widespread in the GDR / the new federal states until 1975 (West Germany) and 1990 . The standardization was withdrawn on December 31, 1974, existing connectors had to be taken out of use by December 31, 1980. In the new federal states they had to be converted by December 31, 1997. However, they can still be found, especially on farms.

The connector has four contacts, one each for the three outer conductors of the three-phase alternating current and one for earth potential. Similar to the four-pole CEE plug connector according to IEC 60309 , they have no connection for the neutral conductor , so they are pure three-phase plug connectors .

The plug is protected against twisted insertion by a nose on one side.

hazards

During operation it can easily happen that the nose is sheared against twisted insertion of the plug. If you plug such a damaged plug into the socket rotated by 180 °, the ground pin is connected to one of the live external conductors, and thus all grounded housing parts of the device. In the case of metal connector housings, it is to be expected that full voltage is also applied to the connector housing. Touching any of these exposed parts can result in a potentially fatal electrical accident .

variants

The connectors were standardized for 380  V in variants for 25, 40, 63 and 100  A.
