Oxydul

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Oxydul is an outdated term for oxides of low oxidation states .

The word comes from the Greek-Latin. Made-up word “oxydum” = “oxide” from, the suffixation with the Latin deminutive to “-ulus, -a, -um”, thus “oxydulum” means “little oxide”, “small oxide”. It indicates the low oxygen content (i.e. the low oxidation state) in Oxydulene compared to the Oxyden (old spelling!).

Examples:

  • nitrous oxide, formerly known as nitrogen oxide .
  • earlier than the phosphate of ferrous oxide and phosphate of iron oxide labeled iron phosphates .
