PDF / E

PDF with 3D objects

PDF / E is a special Portable Document Format (PDF) for Engineering (Eng., Engineering '), which has, among other things, the ability of an interactive 3D presentation. A typical field of application of PDF / E is, for example, a construction drawing, which on the one hand can be printed out directly on paper, but can also be viewed interactively on the computer; for example, individual parts can be rotated, pulled apart or faded in and out. PDF / E is standardized by the ISO 24517 standard.

history

As of Adobe Acrobat version 7.0, PDF has the technical enhancements to display interactive 3D graphics. For this purpose, Acrobat has been extended so that it can convert certain source formats accordingly, such as from AutoCad or Microsoft Visio. However, in mid-2010 Adobe sold its conversion technology for PDF / E to Tetra4D, which has since provided the corresponding plug-in for the current version Acrobat X (= 10.0). The free Adobe Acrobat Reader will also be able to display PDF / E interactively in the future without restrictions.

Independently of this, there have been conversion solutions to PDF / E on an open source basis for some time.
