PHP license

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The PHP license is a free software license from the PHP Group . It is recognized by the Open Source Initiative (OSI) and the Free Software Foundation (FSF) as an open source or free software license. The PHP license is not compatible with the GNU General Public License (GPL) as it restricts the use of the word “PHP” in derivative software products.

The PHP license grants the freedom to change and further use the source code , whereby the following conditions must be met:

  • The copyright notice, the list of conditions and the disclaimer must remain in the source code. If distributed in binary form, all other materials that are supplied or the documentation must contain these texts.
  • The source code can either be used under the terms of the current version of the PHP license or, alternatively, any later version. However, only the PHP Group is entitled to change these conditions.
  • The derivative software may not be advertised under the name "PHP" without the prior permission of the PHP Group, nor may the derivative software contain "PHP" in its name.
  • When disseminating the product, it must always be made clear that it is based on software from the PHP Group.

The last two conditions are comparable to the advertising clause of the original BSD license .

The PHP scripting language version 4.0 or higher is sold under the PHP license ; some packages in the PEAR library also use this license.
