PPP over ATM

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

PPPoA is a transmission technology in data networks and stands for PPP over ATM . The PPP network protocol is packed into ATM cells via AAL5 . PPPoA is used with ADSL connections based on ATM .

Structure and special features

With PPPoA, there is no Ethernet frame compared to PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE) , which reduces the overhead and achieves a slightly higher connection speed. The protocol is standardized in RFC 2364 .

ADSL connection using PPTP + PPPoA

The Point-to-Point Protocol is tunneled through the Ethernet using PPTP and through the ATM connection using PPPoA

A combination of PPTP and PPPoA is used for ADSL connections . Here, a small, first Ethernet - LAN between ADSL modem and computer set up. In the course of the ADSL dial-in, the computer sets up a PPTP connection to the modem within this LAN. However, this does not take on the function of a PPTP server, but converts the PPTP data packets into PPPoA data packets using a so-called PPPoA-to-PPTP relay and forwards them to the provider via the telephone line.

In the opposite direction, incoming PPPoA data packets are converted into PPTP data packets and sent on to the computer. This creates a PPP connection between the computer and the provider.

distribution

PPPoA is used in some countries (including Austria ), but is less common internationally than PPPoE. In the past, routers had to be compatible with the locally used protocol; today most routers can be switched between PPPoA and PPPoE.
