The Palácio das Cardosas forms the southern end of the Praça da Liberdade

The Palácio das Cardosas is a former palace in the Portuguese city of Porto . It occupies the entire southern side of the Praça da Liberdade and thus forms the urban development end of the plaza ensemble, formed from Praça da Liberdade, Avenida dos Aliados and Praça do General Humberto Delgado .

history

The building was started in the first half of the 19th century as a convent of the Brothers of Santo Elói. After the monks had to leave their homes, the merchant Manuel Cardoso dos Santos bought the half-finished building and completed the construction work. In 2006 a group of investors took over the building. A hotel belonging to the InterContinental Hotels Group will open there in autumn 2011 .
