Palangka Raya is an Indonesian city. It is located on the island of Borneo and is the capital of the province of Kalimantan Tengah (Central Kalimantan ). Its population is 220,962 (as of 2010).

The city emerged from the small settlement of Pahandut, which was raised to the capital of the newly established province of Kalimantan Tengah in 1957 and renamed Palangka Raya. Today the city is the administrative, traffic and economic center of the province with its own airport .

In recent times the city has often been the scene of conflicts between the indigenous Dayak and people who were resettled here from other regions of Indonesia as part of the controversial " Transmigrasi " program .

Palangka Raya is also the first place in the focus of the Indonesian government when looking for a replacement capital instead of Jakarta, as the urban area of Jakarta is sinking over a large area due to the constant abstraction of groundwater and threatens to be partially flooded.
