The Palata Srbije ( Serbian - Cyrillic Палата Србије , German: Palace of Serbia ) is the largest building in Belgrade in terms of area . It is located in the Novi Beograd district between the Bulevar Miahajlo Pupin and the Bulevar Nikola Tesla .

history

Construction of the palace began in June 1947 as one of the first structures in Novi Beograd based on plans by architects Vladimir Potočnjak , Antun Ulrich , Zlatko Neumann and Dragica Perak . The construction work was stopped in 1950. Construction work resumed in 1954 and the plans were revised by the architect Mihailo Jaković . The building was completed in 1962.

Subsequently it was both the seat of government, more precisely the seat of the "Federal Executive Council" ( Savezno izvršno veće , therefore the common acronym of the building is often still SIV 1 ) and the seat of the President of Yugoslavia. From 1992 to 2003 it was the seat of the government of the FR Yugoslavia and from 2003 to 2006 the seat of the Foreign and Defense Ministry and the President of the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro . At that time the building was known as the Palata federacije ( Palace of the Federation ). After the dissolution of the State Union in May 2006, the building remained under the government of the Republic of Serbia . Since then the common name has been Palata Srbije .

Building

The building has a floor area of ​​5500 m² and is shaped like the Latin letter H. It has six lounges and a large domed hall with space for 2000 people. The building is a reinforced concrete structure and has a marble facade.
