Palazzo Altieri
The Palazzo Altieri is a palace in Rome . It is located in Via del Plebiscito in Piazza del Gesù opposite the church Il Gesù in Rione Pigna . The complex takes up the entire quarter between Via del Plebiscito, Via del Gesù, Via Santo Stefano del Cacco and Via degli Astalli.
The Altieri family had owned individual houses in this place for a long time. At the beginning of the 17th century, Lorenzo Altieri had these individual houses combined. By 1655 the architect Giovanni Antonio De Rossi completed the palace on behalf of Cardinal Gianbattista Altieri . With the election of Emilio Altieri as Pope Clement X in 1670, de Rossi was again commissioned to expand the palace. After de Rossi's death in 1695, the architects Alessandro Speroni, Clemente Orlandi and Giuseppe Barbieri took over from the construction management team.
The baroque facade to the Piazza del Gesù is noteworthy. You enter an atrium through a columned portal, through which you reach the first courtyard with Ionic pilasters. A portico separates the first from the larger second courtyard.
Inside, the staircase is noteworthy, which was one of the most elaborate of its time. The fresco by Carlo Maratta , Triumph of Meekness, is also significant .
The palace now houses a library and the Altieri family archive. It contains a bust of Clement X by Gian Lorenzo Bernini .
The actress Anna Magnani lived in an apartment in the palace for many years until her death in 1973. Her last film appearance in Fellini's Roma was there on her doorstep.
