Panayiotis Demetriou

Panayiotis Demetriou ( Greek Παναγιώτης Δημητρίου , born May 6, 1939 in Strongylo ) is a Cypriot politician of the Christian Democratic Democrats Synagermos (DISY).

Life

Panayiotis Demetriou attended the Cyprus Pedagogical Academy from 1957 to 1959 and graduated from 1965 to 1968 with a degree in law (Barrister-at-Law). He has been working as a lawyer since 1970. He was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor of the French Republic.

In 1989 he was secretary for organizational issues of the Democratic Collection Movement in his DISY party and served on the board from 1994 to 2003. From 1996 to 2004 he sat as chairman of the Legal Affairs Committee in the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus and was an observer of the European Parliament shortly before Cyprus joined the European Union . From 1997 to 2001 he was chairman of the Cypriot delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe .

After Cyprus acceded to the EU, Demetriou was elected to the European Parliament in June 2004 , to which he was a member until July 2009 as a member of the Group of the European People's Party . Demetriou was a member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs. He was also in the delegations to the EU-Armenia, EU-Azerbaijan and EU-Georgia Parliamentary Cooperation Committees and in the delegation for relations with India.
